EW top-50

This is Entertainment Weekly's top-50 movies of the last 25 years (there are 100, but I'm too lazy for that) I stole the list from someone else's blog b/c I'm a boring, mindless fuck with not one single original thought in my pea-sized brain. Movies in bold are ones I've seen, with the accompanying stars for my own meaningless 2cents. The ones with question marks are ones I think I might have seen or seen part of. This list would come from EW. It's full of "entertainment", lest I be mistaken.

I guess I agree that some of these are very good films. I put Goodfellas at the top, with the LOTR trilogy right after that. Titanic sucks enormous balls. I thought The Player was quite good and deserved a higher spot. I'm sort of surprised I haven't seen more, but I don't watch that many movies anymore; it's a function of children. To watch "mature" fare, we have to wait until after the boys are down, but by that time I'm sleepy. To enjoy a good movie I have to start by no later than 9, and that's on the weekend. On a work night I have to start by 7. And with $7-9 ticket prices, we don't go to many. We spend more disposable $$ on CDs, of which we have many. As you can see, I'm not one to be bludgeoned with the delight that is the animated family movie. I never caught the Disney or Shrek bug, although Toy Story is pretty good. Finding Nemo isn't on this list, but for animated movies it's pretty good. I don't know. I should go find something constructive to do.

That issue of EW had many of those lists, for every category. (I get both EW and the New Yorker as subscriptions, satisfying my interest in pop culture and my need to learn about new things in two very different ways.) Sometimes they provided "whys," sometimes not. Sometimes I could see a point they made -- perhaps the movie isn't great, but paved the way for some new technique or trend, which makes it important. (I've read that the movie "Seven," which I've never seen, led to a whole bunch of sepia-toned films -- has something to do with the lens or filter used. So it had an influence even if the film may or may not be amazing...)

Anyway, I find these lists very subjective but entertaining to read, certainly. And you can spend a lot of time reading them...
